Interim Leadership in Harrison College of Business

Dr. Gary Johnson, CPA, CMA, CGFM, associate dean of the Donald L. Harrison College of Business and professor of accounting at Southeast Missouri State University, was named interim dean of the Harrison College of Business immediately following the March 5, 2017 death of Dr. Gerald McDougall, long-serving dean of the College. Dr. Johnson served in this capacity through June 30, 2017.

Johnson has been associate dean of the Harrison College of Business since 2006 and previously served as interim dean from June 1, 2015, to February 15, 2016, when Gerald McDougall served as interim provost and chief academic officer.

Professionally, Johnson has served as chair of the board of the Missouri Society of CPAs, president of the Southeast Chapter of the Missouri Society of CPAs, president of the Missouri Association of Accounting Educators and president of the North American Accounting Society. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Missouri Society of CPA and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Dr. Johnson holds a doctoral degree from the University of Arkansas with a major in accounting and minors in economics and computer information systems. He also holds an MBA from Missouri State University.

Dr. Judy Wiles, chair of the Department of Management and Marketing and director of the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Southeast Missouri State University, was named interim dean effective July 1 until July 1, 2018, unless a permanent dean is seated earlier.

Dr. Kevin Dickson, professor of management and director of the Jane Stephens Honors Program, will assume the position of interim chair of the Department of Management and Marketing under the same timeline.

Dr. Karl Kunkel, Southeast provost, announced the appointment, also acknowledging that the recent national search for a new dean was not successful. Open forums with three finalists for the position were held in February.

“I am very pleased that Dr. Wiles accepted my offer to serve as interim dean of the Harrison College of Business next year,” Kunkel said.  “She has shown strong leadership during her time as a department chair in the college and has the respect of our business faculty.  I have strong confidence in her ability to provide strong leadership during the period while we continue searching for the next dean.  We plan to launch another national search beginning as early as possible in the fall.”

Wiles is a professor of marketing at Southeast where she has been teaching for 32 years. She received her doctorate in business administration from the University of Memphis in 1993. She holds an MBA and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, both from Southeast. Prior to teaching full time, she co-owned and managed an advertising agency and a promotional products sales firm for 10 years.

Wiles is the past president of the Marketing Management Association (MMA). She is a founder and past president of the Tri-State Advertising and Marketing Professionals and past president and on the advisory board of MBAA International. She has published articles in the Journal of Advertising Research, European Journal of Marketing, Current Issues and Research in Advertising, Journal of the International Academy for Case Studies, Academy of Marketing Studies Journal and Business Insights. She has presented and published papers in the areas of business ethics, advertising and promotion management.
