Southeast Staff, Faculty, Students Honored with ADDY Awards

University Communications and Marketing along with faculty and students at Southeast Missouri State University won several local ADDY Awards February 24 at the annual 2017 American Advertising Federation (AAF) Awards Show.

University Communication and Marketing

University Communications and Marketing was honored with a “Best of Show” award for The Talking Booth video, which was produced as part of Southeast’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 2016 Dinner Celebration. The video shows clips of more than 40 hours of conversations taped at Southeast in fall 2015 that resulted when talking booths were placed on campus inviting passersby to ask questions of members of various ethnic and cultural groups. What resulted was honest conversation about race, religion, identity, diversity, stereotypes and the uniqueness of everyone’s personal experience. Over the course of a two-week period, talking booths invited students to stop and “Ask a Muslim,” “Ask an African American,” “Ask a Caucasian,” “Ask an LGBTQ,” “Ask an International Student” and “Ask a Christian.”

The department also received seven gold and five silver ADDY Awards.

“It is an amazing privilege to have one of the most impactful videos produced on campus to be recognized with a ‘Best of Show’ award,” said Jeff Harmon, executive director of University Communications and Marketing. “It is an honor for our staff and students to be recognized for their hard work and dedication.”

Harmon credits Tonya Wells, assistant director of marketing, and Aaron Eisenhauer, former digital image specialist in University Communications and Marketing at Southeast, for the video’s ingenuity and high-quality production that resulted in more than 100,000 views, 260,000 reached, and over 1,700 social media shares one week after its release.

“We are so thrilled ‘The Talking Booth’ video received the ‘Best of Show’ award,” Wells said. “Some projects are just different, and from the moment we began working on this video, we knew it was special. It’s just an intriguing concept. The topics discussed were so worthwhile, and our students, faculty, and staff who participated truly brought with them informed opinions, honest questions and the raw emotion for what’s at stake.”

The winners were selected from 129 print, digital and multi-media advertising projects, all created, published or aired in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Paducah, Kentucky, and Harrisburg, Illinois, markets between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016.

  • What Will You Bring, integrated advertising campaign – local consumer category;
  • Homecoming 2016: We Are One, integrated branded content campaign category;
  • The Talking Booth, public service non-broadcast audio/visual category

Silver ADDY Awards:

  • River Campus Season Brochure, brochure category;
  • Southeast Magazine, magazine design category;
  • SEMO Football Commercials, local television commercial campaign category;
  • Walk for Women, integrated advertising campaign – local consumer category;
  • Countdown to Convocation, online/interactive campaign category

Department of Art

In addition, Southeast’s Department of Art won a Bronze ADDY Award for the River Campus 2016 Summer Arts Festival Poster in the poster category.

“It is an honor and amazing surprise to be recognized for the third year in a row for my work on this annual popular event,” said Louise Bodenheimer, professor and area head of graphic design and illustration in Southeast’s Department of Art. “It is always a privilege to design and work for the Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts. I greatly enjoyed designing this poster once again, and to be recognized by professionals outside the community.”

Students

Ten student ADDY Awards – three Gold, four Silver and three Bronze – were presented to students from Southeast Missouri State University.

“This is a great opportunity for collaboration between students across disciplines and the chance to have real-world experiences in how to work together and professionally for a client,” Bodenheimer said. “Dr. (Sandipan) Sen and I are very proud of them. To have their work recognized outside the University setting is an amazing accomplishment they can use to grow their skills and talent to be successful in the workplace.”

“We would like to thank our clients and Southeast faculty and staff for supporting the students in this collaborative experiential learning initiative,” said Sen, associate professor of marketing in Southeast’s Department of Management and Marketing. “The student groups worked extremely hard to design competitive and creative campaigns. It is with the support of clients like Colby Williams from Parengo Coffee, Nick Cuchetti and Robert Freeman from AgDynamic, and Dr. Don Stokes from WhamAds that our students can participate in professional industry competitions.”

Support from Dr. Gerald McDougall, dean of Southeast’s Harrison College of Business, Dr. Rhonda Weller-Stilson, associate dean and director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, Dr. Judy Wiles, chair of the Department of Management and Marketing and director of the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Caroline Kahler, chair of Southeast’s Department of Art, has also been vital to the program’s and students’ success, he said.

Local Gold AAF winners are eligible to compete in the second level of the three-tiered American Advertising Awards Competition, the District 9 competition. The district judging will be conducted this month and includes entries submitted by other AAF clubs throughout Missouri, Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska. District 9 winners will be eligible for the ultimate competition, the national ADDY, presented in June every year by AAF. As a three-tiered national competition with 40,000 entrants overall, the national ADDY Awards are the advertising industry’s largest and most representative competition, recognizing creative excellence and the very best advertising worldwide.

Tri-State Advertising & Marketing Professionals (AMP) is a non-profit organization made up of communications professionals in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri; Paducah, Kentucky; and Harrisburg, Illinois, areas. Tri-State AMP is affiliated with the American Advertising Federation and the Ninth District, AAF.
